More choices – Calais vs Seal

Oct 30, 2026

For those that aren’t aware – in this blog heading a Calais is a type of premium luxury sedan made by Holden and a Seal is a similar all electric sedan made by BYD. Retirees nowadays or Australian’s planning for retirement are faced with so many choices, not just lifestyle but more so financially and what they can spend money on.

For those retiring 10+ years ago, even something as simple as a car, the choices were much simpler. You might have been driving a standard model Holden Commodore whilst you are working and in retirement you might have decided you will buy one nicer car and upgrade to a Holden Calais. Now – even deciding what car to buy has become a task with so many more choices over the last few years which can make it difficult to decide.

In this constantly changing world – there are more options every year for purchasing a car and it can be a big financial decision. There is a lot to weigh up when someone is retiring and questions I often hear from retirees that they ask themselves are:

· What engine, a petrol, electric or hybrid?

· Do we need something that can tow and does the above impact me?

· Do we even need multiple cars for someone in a couple, or do we buy one good car?

· Do we downsize cars now we are retired or do we actually get even bigger cars now that we might be carrying grandkids in the back?

· Which brand do we choose?

· How do we know what is and isn’t reliable?

There aren’t a one size fits all approach or an easy way to make decisions as options for cars become greater and greater as the years go on.
